At ALA’s annual conference the incoming president, Leslie Burger, gave a speech. As part of that speech she listed her vision or what she wishes for libraries. This was recently printed in the August 2006 edition of American Libraries on page 56 and I am going to copy those wishes here because they are mine too and I hope that they are also yours:
All libraries to have the funding they need.
Librarians and library workers to be paid what they’re worth.
Libraries to be the center of life in their communities/schools/campuses.
A world in which no one will ever ask, “Do we still need the library?”
Libraries to be partners in education and economic development.
Libraries to be destinations of choice - for learning and enjoyment, gatherings and discussion, places to thrive and grow.
