A HUGE thank you to all the employees who helped set up the DiscoverStations - there is NO WAY Corey and I could have finished all the libraries as quickly as we did without your help!

We are still making a few changes and working on printing issues and DiscoverAssist issues. But the important thing is that customers now have access to the Internet again and in most cases we were only down part of Friday and Saturday, which I think is pretty incredible.

We have a new button that is marked “GUESTS Click Here!” I will send an e-mail detailing how this works but for the immediate moment this is the deal. When a customer comes to the Circ desk and says he does not have a library card and/or is a visitor just ask them to use the GUESTS Click Here button and they will receive 30 minutes versus 60.

Thanks again to everyone who helped,
Mindy

“On October 1, Sony plans to launch both the Sony Reader and a bookstore on the Internet that will offer some 10,000 e-books from “the top six publishers,” according to Reuters. The Reader will retail for about $350. The company estimated that e-books would cost 25% less than printed versions of the same title.

Unlike most computers and previous e-book devices, the screen of the Sony Reader is not backlit, allowing the company to make the ironic pitch that its e-book reader closely resembles paper. The Reader holds about 80 e-books at a time, weighs nine ounces and measures 7″ X 5″ by 1/2″. ” Shelf Awareness for Wednesday, September 27, 2006

So what do you think about this?

Cory and I have reworked the schedule as follows:
Monday: Glenwood and Silt
Tuesday: New Castle and Carbondale
Wednesday: Rifle and Parachute
Thursday: Administration Training and finish whatever installations we don’t get done.
Friday: More training and guests coming to look at the DiscoverStations.

Last night I just finished reading this book which is in the New Castle collection. I really enjoyed it and highly recommend it. Mindy

Book Sense: May We Recommend

Golden Country by Jennifer Gilmore (Scribner, $25, 0743288637). “Jennifer Gilmore’s first novel is an account of three generations of Jewish Americans in the early half of the 20th century as they rise from poverty in Brooklyn to making it in America. This splendid work is wise, witty, and unsentimental as it shows the costs, as well as the rewards, of achievement in the golden land.”–Carla Cohen, Politics and Prose Bookstore & Coffeehouse, Washington, D.C.

A Big, BIG thank you to all of the employees who helped us move furniture, disconnect and move computers and clean in their libraries yesterday. We could not have done it without your help.

Do you read the Library Lounge?
If so I would like you to send me an e-mail at mkittay@marmot.org with the subject “I read it!”.
You do not have to include a message if you don’t want to - but any comments for improvements would be appreciated.
DO NOT TELL YOUR CO-WORKERS OR STAFF ABOUT THE POLL - IT IS UP TO EACH EMPLOYEE TO FIND OUT ABOUT THE POLL BY VOLUNTARILY READING THE LIBRARY LOUNGE.
Thank you for your cooperation,
Mindy

2006 BBW; Read Banned Books: They're Your Ticket to Freedom

Uncategorized 10:35 am

The librarian who quietly removes a book from the shelf because of a noisy complaint is more guilty of restricting intellectual freedom than the complainant. The librarian has responsibility to a tradition, a body of law, and to the procedures established and approved for dealing with complaints. Worse, once the librarian has surrendered on a single occasion, he or she is the first target in future assaults. Extremism feeds on success. It is made bolder and more demanding by victory.–Joanne Goldsmith
