LII has made additions and changes to its collection, September 11 and Beyond (including new sites added in the last several weeks). We hope you find this topic page useful.
This is an excellent resource. I expect you might get some questions next week where you could point customers to this link and it would serve as a good electronic bibliography.

One Book, One Town author visits Carbondale on Sept. 14
By John Stroud
Managing Editor
Helen Thayer’s “Polar Dream,” about her 1988 solo journey to the magnetic north pole, has been Carbondale’s “One Book, One Town” selection this summer. The Gordon Cooper Library hosts the author for a book talk and potluck on Sept. 14 at the Thunder River Theatre.
Renowned explorer, author and lecturer Helen Thayer comes to Carbondale Thursday, Sept. 14, to top off this summer’s “One Book, One Town — Everybody Reads” promotion, sponsored by the Gordon Cooper Library.
Thayer is the author of “Polar Dream,” this year’s featured literary selection. The book is about her 1988 solo journey to the magnetic North Pole, with only a black husky named Charlie as her companion.
Walking and skiing for 27 days in the Arctic pulling a 160-pound sled for 364 miles, Thayer became the first woman — and the oldest person at age 50 — to travel on foot, without re-supply, to the magnetic North Pole. Along the way, she encountered dangerous polar bears and faced sub-zero temperatures and fierce Arctic storms.
She will tell about this and other adventures during her talk and slide show at 6 p.m. Sept. 14 at the Thunder River Theatre, followed by a potluck and further discussion.
“It’s a great way to get to know your neighbor, through a book,” Gordon Cooper Library Director Marilyn Murphy said. “Helen will stick around afterwards to visit with the community and talk about the book.”
Earlier that day, Thayer will give the presentation to students at Carbondale Middle School, Ross Montessori and Carbondale Community School.
“One of our committee members had read her book and thought it would be a little different from past years,” Murphy said.
Carbondale’s One Book, One Town is in its third year. Past selections have been fiction, including Margaret Coel’s “Eagle Catcher” and Pam Houston’s “Sight Hound.”
“We wanted to do a nonfiction selection this time, and we wanted to appeal to a broader base — children and men,” Murphy said. “It’s a good book for children, and one that’s easy to read.”
The library lined up 50 copies of “Polar Dream” for the summer reading promotion, which will go to the school libraries after next week.
“That way, if some of the students haven’t read it already, hopefully they will be inspired to after seeing her slide show and hearing her speak,” Murphy said.
Thayer is well-known as an international explorer, and is also a National Geographic certified lecturer.
Next Thursday’s event is free to the public. Bring a dish to share for the potluck. For more information, call the library at 963-2889.
