“On October 1, Sony plans to launch both the Sony Reader and a bookstore on the Internet that will offer some 10,000 e-books from “the top six publishers,” according to Reuters. The Reader will retail for about $350. The company estimated that e-books would cost 25% less than printed versions of the same title.
Unlike most computers and previous e-book devices, the screen of the Sony Reader is not backlit, allowing the company to make the ironic pitch that its e-book reader closely resembles paper. The Reader holds about 80 e-books at a time, weighs nine ounces and measures 7″ X 5″ by 1/2″. ” Shelf Awareness for Wednesday, September 27, 2006
So what do you think about this?

Me thinks that e-books were a tremendous flop last time around. Some vendors even tried putting a leather cover on the device to make it look and feel like a book. They still flopped.
With the advent of a screen that is not backlit, maybe they’ve learned from their mistakes. With the prevelance of PDAs, Blackberries and such maybe the market is now ready to try again.
The cost (kinda steep) and the availablity of titles (which is yet to be seen) will be interesting factors to watch.
If they came down in price, I’d buy one. However, I like that techie stuff.

I sure wasn’t impressed by the first ones when I saw them, but I agree, maybe they have improved. The price still puts me off a bit.
