Wilma Paddock will now be the library Human Resources contact.

So the rules are the same as before:
1) Please contact Wilma (or Mindy if Wilma is not available), for any HR questions.
2) DO NOT call the County HR offices unless you are specifically directed to do so by either Wilma or Mindy.

Some tips:
1) Items related to health insurance can be quickly resolved (usually) by calling Urman directly at 800-332-1168 and bypassing HR altogether.
2) Questions regarding retirement can often be answered by using the website ccoera.org.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks,
Mindy

The Lanier LD425 printer is supported both in black and white and in colour in Linux so DiscoverStation should be able to get them to work.

What they do is set up 2 “printers” on the DiscoverStation, one called color, and one called black_white. The black_white printer will be the default. Both of these “printers” actually print to the same printer, they just have different printing options set in the driver. They will also set up 2 print payment policies so that the popup message that appears before the Customer prints something will say the appropriate amount they should pay for their print job.

The Post below is from another Blog called LibraryCrunch http://www.librarycrunch.com/ - Thanks to Michael for this great information.

Stephen Abram references an excellent study done by the Los Angeles Times and Bloomberg on the electronic life of teens and young adults.

Some of the things I found interesting:

“No more than 10% of each age group (12-17 and 18-24) thought there were too many entertainment choices.”

“Females were much more likely to do multiple things [multitasking] than males.”

“Nearly three out of five girls between the ages of 15 and 17 reported doing at least one other thing while doing homework, along with 54% of boys that age.”

“Only 46% of younger teens and 36% of teens 15 to 17 focus on their homework…Music was by far the most popular homework accompaniment.”

“Only 26% [of computer using teens] said they work and surf unsupervised.”

IM use is almost equal to email use in the 12-17 age group.

“Social networking websites such as MySpace.com are very popular…just under half of girls and 43% of boys reported visiting such sites, joined by 56% of young women and 41% of men. The older adults were less likely to spend time on social sites — 66% of men over 21 said they do not visit such sites, along with 52% of women.”

“Fifteen percent of girls 12-14 who visit such [social networking] sites said they spend more than four hours a day doing so.”

The board approved the 2007 budget at their last meeting and this included replacing some staff and circulation computers. Here is the list so you can rejoice! (The computers chosen for replacement were based on age - the oldest computers in the system are being replaced - BUT not OPAC’s).

Carbondale: Circulation computer 195
Glenwood: Circulation computer 180 and 179
New Castle: Circulation computer 198
Silt: Circulation computer 250
Rifle: Circulation computer 099
Parachute: Circulation computer 130 & Branch manager’s computer 131

Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks,
Mindy

If you look at our website you will see that there is now a link to sign up for a library card on-line.
Please let your friends and neighbors know!
In fact, if a potential customer comes into the library and does not have the proper identification on hand to sign up and he/she is interested in databases and downloadable audio books it would be great if you tell them about their option to request a library card on-line. Within 48 hours of their requesting the card on-line they should receive their card number by e-mail. They can then use this number to access our databases and download e-books. They will also receive a library card by mail. When they come in to check out materials the first time a note will pop up from their record telling staff to check their ID. Please try and get either a social security card number or a driver’s license number at that time to add to their record.

Please let Penny and I know if you have any questions about this new service. We hope to be advertising it when we launch the new website but we have it now so that we can work out any bugs that may occur.

Thanks for your help and cooperation,
Mindy

The following is an e-mail I received today from Ryan at DiscoverStation. Rather than try and paraphrase his comments I am just posting the whole thing. I think this spells it out rather well but if you have any questions please let me know or call Ryan.

Your library staff can turn off the Internet filter if they want to, I believe our support staff got confused about one of our newer features.

The new feature is called “Performance Filter”, and is configurable in Network Personalizer (this is the program that Mindy runs). I checked your session profiles, and they all still have the performance filter enabled. This means that if a patron, or library staff member turns off filtering during a session, the performance filter will still be on.

What Performance Filter does is blocks web pages that cause known problems with multi-station software. The biggest culprit is Flash Games. Adobe Flash Player can behave very badly and cause the computer to run extremely slow when more than one complex flash animation is running on a computer at a time. We have written bug reports to Adobe and are doing everything we can to help them fix their software, but they are still months away from a new flash player.

We update the list as we learn more sites that cause serious problems with Adobe Flash Player, right now the sites we block for performance reasons are:
2flashgames.com
addictinggames.com
arcadetown.com
creaders.net
flashplayer.com
freeaddictinggames.com
gamesheep.com
games.yahoo.com
heavygames.com
kraloyun.com
miniclip.com
mofunzone.com
mousebreaker.com
neopets.com
newgrounds.com
outwar.com
runescape.com
spiderriders.com
xgenstudios.com

We are aware that some peoples pages on MySpace cause performance issues, but most of the site doesn’t, and almost all libraries don’t want to block all of myspace, so we don’t include it in our performance filter.

If your staff continue to experiance performance problems, please let us know the time and computer which experianced the problems and we can modify your filters to include the sites that may be causing the problems.

Until we can get the website updated, you will need to direct your users to use the “at home” option for logging onto our databases. All they will need is their library card number to access the database. If they are a guest it would be great if you could use one of your library cards to give them access. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks,
Mindy

If you branch is having to press the F keys for each DiscoverStation each morning then it is because you are turning off your monitors at night. It would be better if you did not turn off the monitors at night. If you have any questions please let me know.
Thanks,
Mindy

This is the best on-line tutorial I have found so far for all the Open Office programs.
