To all who are participating in the social networking contest,
It would be great if you would take the time to post to the Library Lounge your ideas about how to use some of the programs you are learning about.
For example, Emily Hisel has an excellent idea on how to use LibraryThing to help her with her job. She wrote, “I have been using it to remember the characters and books I have read in the juvenile section over the past few months. I want to be able to recommend books to the kids.”
Excellent idea Emily, and you could even invite the other children’s librarians to view your LibraryThing account and you could all use it as a sharing tool for ideas/books for story times or reader advisory….

INVITATION TO THE SOCIAL NETWORKING CONTEST!
You are cordially invited to participate in the Social Networking Contest for the Garfield County Libraries.
This Contest has been developed as a part of the libraries efforts to encourage staff to experiment and learn about the new and emerging technologies that the public is using or may be asking us about. I have called these technologies “Social Networking” but you will find many different names for them such as: Web 2.0, Library 2.0 and Social Software.
Social Networking is a way for people to collaborate and share information online.
“Web 2.0 and Library 2.0 may seem like just the latest technology catch phrase, but what is most important about Library 2.0 is its emphasis on service. As librarians we are all striving to provide the best possible service to our users, employing new technologies to help us achieve that goal. For Library 2.0 to be more than just a catch phrase, it must result in a Library that’s responsive to the needs of its users.” eLearning About Library 2.0 by Janet Balas, Computers in Libraries, January 2007
In order to receive prizes the contest must be completed by July 31, 2007.
If more than 25 employees participate and complete the contest, the Library will raffle off a brand new laptop!
So encourage your co-workers to participate in the contest and have some fun learning and helping each other with these exciting Internet tools!

One of them is not reading them”

“We especially urge young people in all lands to read and discuss the books which were ordered “incinerated” by judges subservient to Fidel Castro in 2003. The paper of books written by Guillermo Cabrera Infante, George Orwell, Martin Luther King, Jr., Carlos Franqui, Vaclav Havel, Oswaldo Paya, Pope John Paul II and many others may have been burned, but their words have flown like birds to the minds of those who yearn to be free.” From the Read a Burned Book Statement http://www.4freadom.org/RBBStatement.html
