Annie Proulx Interview on Bookslut
Bookslut has a wonderful interview on-line with Annie Proulx. It mentions that Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana prepared the screenplay for Brokeback Mountain which I did not know.
Here is a quote attributed to Annie from the above interview: “I read omnivorously, I always have, my entire life. I would rather be dead than not read. So, there’s always time for that. I read while I eat, and our whole family did. We all had very bad manners at the table. All of our books are stained with spaghetti sauce, and that sort of thing.”

WALK THE LINE - NEW JOHNNY CASH MOVIE
Music fans (and yes, not just country music fans) will tell you that Cash’s Folsom Prison album is still considered by many to be one of the greatest live albums ever recorded. In the previews of the movie, we see the scene in which Cash, about to perform at Folsom, is asked by a prison official to “refrain from playing any songs that will remind the inmates that they’re in prison.” An utterly cool Cash replies, “You think they forgot?” Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison: The Making of a Masterpiece (Da Capo, $15.95, 0306814536) is a riveting account of that day and the story that surrounds it. (Thanks to Shelf Awareness e-mail for this information)
Another film version of Pride and Prejudice opens on Friday. Directed by Joe Wright and with a screenplay by Deborah Moggach, the movie based on one of the best novels ever written stars Keira Knightley (Pirates of the Caribbean, Domino and Bend It Like Beckham) as Elizabeth Bennet and Donald Sutherland as her father.
I don’t know if you loved S.E. Hinton’s book The Outsiders as much as I did but if so you will be happy to know that a recut version of Francis Ford Coppola’s 1983 film of “The Outsiders” on DVD, is going to be released on Sept. 20 by Warner Home Video. There is also an excellent New York Times article (click here), about S.E. Hinton and her history. I found it very interesting.

I can highly recommend this movie which is the story of the suffragettes. In particular they concentrate on the period of 1912 to 1920 and Alice Paul and Lucy Burns. It has a great cast including Hilary Swank and Anjelica Huston and is well done. My 13 year old sat through it two times she liked it so much and at the same time she learned a bit of history she might never have known about.
